Les Eyzies is at the centre of the beautiful Dordogne region with its striking scenery – sudden dramatic valleys and green hills which embrace many of ‘Les Plus Beaux Villages de France’, chateaux, and medieval towns. The rivers Vezere - which runs through LesEyzies - and Dordogne have created limestone cliffs over millennia allowing prehistoric man to make homes in caves.
There are 147 UNESCO listed sites of prehistoric interest in the region, with Font de Gaume at just 250 metres walk from your gite, and the most famous at Lascaux, Montignac. In March 1868, the geologist Louis Lartet, discovered the first five skeletons of Cro-Magnons, the earliest known examples of Homo Sapiens, in the Cro-Magnon rock shelter at Les Eyzies-de-Tayac.
Dordogne has a multitude of lovely medieval towns and stunning chateaux. You may recognise some of them from cinema films : Monpazier, Domme, Beynac, Sarlat, Beaumont, La Roque Gageac, Belves, and more. Several local chateaux hold events in the summer; Chateau Milande once owned by exotic dancer and holder of the Legion D'Honneur Josephine Baker has demonstration of birds of prey; Marqueyssac chateau and gardens offer 22 acres of topiary, suspended walkway, events, and a fine restaurant
Getting here
LesEyzies has a train station with links to Bergerac, Perigueux, Bordeaux and Paris. In your gite is an information pack covering travel, markets, and much more.
By road takes at least six hours (A20) from Paris. From Calais will be an absolute minimum of 9 hours (A16 and A20).
By air There are flights to Bergerac - 45 minutes by road - from several UK cities. From other European cities flights exist to Bordeaux, Limoges, Brive-la-Gaillarde.
